Picnic de Palabras

Picnic de Palabras is a social project that started in 2012. It has been replicated throughout Latinamerica and Italy. The objective of Picnic de Palabras is to fall in love with children’s literature. The project started in Alcalá Park in Bogota, Colombia, with a lovely collection of children’s books and a regular schedule from 2-4 pm. The founder of Picnic de Palabras is convinced that there is an educational and emotional value that children or adults can have critical thinking skills through the love of reading. This project has impacted various children, but one of the most inspiring cases in Bogota has been with Fernanda, the daughter of two vendors from a park; her parents don’t know to read, but she has always been interested in books, she was the first ones to arrive at the reading station, she grew up with the project as well as they saw her becoming a young lady, and she says that she learned how to read through Picnic de Palabras. There are more stories from other countries such as Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Brazil, and Uruguay. During the pandemic, it had a pause on the initial activity, and in Bogota, it started once again with Reading in parks and impacting people from the community as one of the children who attended last Sunday comes from Buenaventura, Colombia where they had to migrate and she is learning how to read.
